(c) Download, decompress the Fresco Logic registry fix. Insert the fix into your registry, by double clicking it on windows. This registry fix only inserts a key used by the FL driver to disable the U1/U2 power states I think, but you are using this at your own risk.

I started trying out various Fresco Logic drivers I could get my hands on. I have tried, without success, versions:,,,,, 3.5.24, Version 3.5.24 seemed to be working, but when I pushed the drive by transferring lots of data simultaneously, the device disconnected.

I have contacted AsRock Support (yet again) and these guys have been great in sending me driver v3.0.100.58 which actually works!! To save the day for anyone with the same problem I have made a backup of this working driver!

I bet you tried hard and I know how it feels; I got similar treatment at the time. Fresco Logic (the controller manufacturer of my computer) just ignored my very specific requests for support; probably they knew already the problem existed with their drivers; not sure.

Back to your problem. Given that you tried the WD on other laptops and it works without problems that does point the finger to the Asus laptop. However, do double-check that the different laptops did have the same OS (e.g. win 10) with your Asus, so you can have a fair field to compare, at least as far as the OS goes. Beyond that, you could try to bypass the Asus driver and install the Intel USB drivers from Intel. Maybe you can work with this: -USB-3-0-eXtensible-Host-Controller-Driver, otherwise try to locate which drivers are compatible with that of your laptop. See if you can replace the Asus-supplied driver and helps solve your problem (at your own risk of course :) )

Thank you for sharing your extra efforts on this problem. I had the exact same problem with a WD My Passport 1TB USB 3.0 Portable hard drive and my Fresco FL1000 USB3.0 driver on Windows. It is working perfectly now!

You saved my day, or rather my evening. Have the exact same wd passport as you and had to play detective for about an hour to conclude it must be a problem with the usb 3.0, Fresco, just as yours. And your driver WORKS. Excellent ,and thank you.

Workaround (a) I think implied that you will probably use a well tested, quality USB 3.0 controller coupled with good drivers, so you are indeed changing hardware configuration and there are plenty of those that we know that the drive works. As for the Y-cable, I think it is a good solution for laptops that are known to have issues with power on their usb ports, but for desktops with on-board usb3.0 ports, that should not be an issue, although for some people that can be the case. Not for me.

Thank you for your reply, Here's Asus support answer :Dear sir, Thank you for your e-mail.In this case i would advise you to make use of the "Go Back function" in windows 10.Since your system has been delivered with Windows 7, we do not provide this system with drivers for Windows 10 yet.Probably Windows updates will provide this device with drivers through windows updates in the future.We would advise you to go back to your previous Windows OS till your system will be compatible with Windows 10.A/V is uninstalled and SFC said it fixed some things but issue is still there.Kind regards

The driver roll-back that I mentioned in my previous post was the solution to the problem. Crazy that I had to roll back to a driver that was already outdated when my computer was released but that is what fixed the problem. Anyone having similar problems should check drivers and consider rolling back to the earliest available driver they can find. Test it then update one version at a time until it stops working. Go back to the last version and leave it at that.

The fix for me has been to update the Fresco Logic xHCI (USB3) Controller driver to version - but this is not the newest version, and as kyroguy pointed out, newer versions of the driver caused the same problem. So it seems there is a narrow range of Fresco Logic driver versions that properly support this drive - older versions and newer versions of the driver do not work.

It sounds like you may be experiencing a device-specific issue associated with power management. Power management has been enabled more aggressively in these recent drivers, which would explain why you are seeing this issue with our most up-to-date software.

To update your USB drivers in Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then click Check for Updates. Windows will search for available updates, including driver updates.
